The American Dream Is Alive in Our Communities

As we approach National Homeownership Month this June, I’m reminded daily why Stonington, Groton, and Ledyard remain some of Connecticut’s most desirable communities for homebuyers. From our historic seaside charm to our strong sense of community, eastern Connecticut continues to embody the American Dream of homeownership.

The Evolution of Homeownership in America

National Homeownership Month traces its roots to 1995 when President Clinton established National Homeownership Week. This initiative aimed to:

Expand access to affordable housing
Educate first-time buyers
Strengthen community development

In 2002, President Bush expanded the observance to the entire month of June, noting that owning a home lies at the heart of the American Dream.

Key Milestones in Housing History

The team approach includes a Realtor, Home Inspector and a Lawyer.

1862
Homestead Act
Granted 160-acre plots to settlers

1934
Federal Housing Administration
Created modern mortgage system

1944
GI Bill
Provided veteran home loans

1968
Fair Housing Act – Prohibited housing discrimination

Connecticut’s Fair Housing Leadership

At the April 9th Eastern Connecticut Association of Realtors meeting at the Norwich Inn and Spa, we reaffirmed our commitment to:

Expanding access to homeownership programs
Combating modern housing discrimination
Promoting inclusive community development

Connecticut has been at the forefront of fair housing since 1949 when we first prohibited discrimination in public housing.

Our state laws now protect against discrimination based on:

Race and national origin
Lawful source of income
Domestic violence victim status
Gender identity and sexual orientation

“Fair housing isn’t just a legal obligation – it’s a moral imperative for building strong communities.”
